Two Wheels vs. Four – Motorcycle Safety For Car Owners

Motorcycle AccidentsIt happens at least once or twice in every Angelinos daily commute. No matter what road, highway, avenue or interstate you may take, at least once in that drive, a motorcycle will pass you. For the most part, no matter how brazen it may seem, most motorcycle riders are both well aware of their surroundings and are able to react appropriately. After all, when it comes to your four-wheeled vehicle versus their two-wheeled machine, there is a great deal riding on their ability to avoid trouble.

But it is also up to you, the automobile owner, to abide by the rules of the road and take extra special care when dealing with motorcyclists. As the weather begins to warm up and more riders hit the road, consider some of the following safety tips:

Watch Your Blind Spot – As the old adage goes, out of sight – out of mind. Most bikes are small enough to easily mask their position on the road and quite accidentally, end up in your blind spot. For both of your sakes, be extra vigilant when you know there is a biker in your vicinity. Give them an extra bit of padding, with four to five seconds of break time allowed in any direction.

Watch The Left Hook – Over half of motorcycle accidents in the state of California, and nationwide for that matter, are the result of a motorist turning while a biker continues straight. There are multiple reasons this can happen, but it often comes down to turn signals and how the two vehicles approach the intersection. When attempting to turn on a light – either left or right – keep an eye on any oncoming motorcyclists. What you see indicated may not be what they are actually planning.

Watch The Weather – Obviously this goes for anyone out on the road, but double for motorcyclists. A motorcycle has significantly less handling power when subjected to slippery streets or icy pavement. Make sure to give bikers plenty of stopping-space when the weather takes a turn for the worse.

That said, even in the best conditions, accidents can and will happen. If you have been injured in a motorcycle or automobile collision, it is important to understand and potentially exercise your legal rights.
