Multi-Vehicle Accident Closes 405, Kills One

A fiery collision involving five vehicles brought the 405 Freeway in North Hills to a standstill early Friday morning. One woman was killed at the scene of the crash and four others were injured.

The crash happened during early morning rush hour near Devonshire Street. According to California Highway Patrol officers, the accident occurred as a chain-reaction when traffic slowed suddenly. “Someone probably panic-braked and then a rear-end sequence occurred,” said CHP officer Leland Tang.

Three of the vehicles collided with each other against the freeway divider before catching fire. A pickup truck overturned in the crash, as well, and another vehicle that was involved managed t to make it to the right shoulder before stopping.  One of the drivers was fortunate enough to walk away from his burning truck with his young daughter.

One person was taken to the hospital immediately in unknown condition.

Vehicle pileups are far too common along California’s highways. It takes only one second of distraction or a single mistake to cause serious repercussions and even permanent damage.
