Deadly Catalina Island Boat Crash Claims One Life

Catalina Island Boat AccidentA collision off the coast of Catalina Island left a number of boaters injured and claimed the life of one person this past weekend. Coast Guard officials were alerted to a boat accident between a small boat and a dinghy around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday morning. The collision happened a quarter-mile off Casino Point, in Descanso Bay.

Five people were on-board the dinghy, including the son of a former NFL executive, when it was struck. The small boat had two passengers. Three people were flown from the scene to the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, one with head injuries and two others with only minor injuries.

It’s still unclear how the 26-year old man in the dinghy died. Authorities are still investigating the accident. The man’s uncle stated, “The family is devastated and in shock, because Michael was a special, positive, young man.”

Boat collisions in Southern California are more common than many people would believe. Unfortunately, just like car accidents, they can quickly turn deadly because speed, skill and drugs often play a role. However, unlike car collisions, accidents on open water can lead to drowning and a variety of other complications not present on land.
