Nine Workers Injured in Los Angeles Freeway Construction Accident

By Robert Kahn on October 16, 2015 - Comments off

Construction AccidentA total of nine construction workers have been injured, three of them critically, in a tragic construction accident on the 91 Freeway in Corona.

As reported by NBC 4, authorities rushed to the scene after reports of a bridge collapse along the East Grand Boulevard roadway. Around 11 p.m., a section of the new on-ramp was being lowered, when the supporting jacks gave way and the structure dropped about 16 inches, crushing wooden support beams below. Beams struck workers in the area, causing life-threatening injuries. Witnesses stated that it felt “like an earthquake.”

Seven of the nine injured workers are still in the hospital. Three of them are in critical condition. One person was released.

The $1.4 billion dollar East Grand Boulevard bridge expansion project has been put on hold, pending an investigation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and CalTrans. John Standidorf, Deputy Director of Riverside County Transportation Commission, stated, “At this point, we’ll take whatever time is necessary to learn what we need from what happened.”

While construction sites are dangerous places to work, construction zones on or around highways can be particularly menacing. Workers are operating around incredibly large pieces of concrete, to say nothing of the vehicles flying past. It’s up to the managers and owners of these sites to maintain a safe working environment, or face legal action.
