LA City Council Backs Medina Alert System to Catch Hit-and-Run Drivers

By Robert Kahn on February 2, 2015 - Comments off

According to the Los Angeles City Council, roughly 20,000 hit-and-run incidents occur in the city every year – that’s about one accident every half hour, every day, for an entire year. In an effort to cut back on the epidemic, the city council is backing a proposal to create an emergency alert system that would allow the public to help catch hit-and-run drivers.

Much like the nationwide Amber Alert system, the Medina Alert would help spread information about a suspected hit-and-run driver’s vehicle via electronic freeway billboards, text messages, and existing city warning systems.

Additionally, Councilman Joe Buscaino and others have called for an automatic reward system to help encourage public involvement. The proposed awards would include $1,000 for reporting property damage to $50,000 for a fatal hit-and-run.

Not only is fleeing the scene of a traffic accident deplorable, it is also a crime. Under California vehicle code 20001 and 20002, drivers involved in an auto accident must remain at the scene of the crash, whether the incident involves a piece of property or another person, subject to certain exceptions. Failing to identify yourself to the other parties involved may result in criminal liability.
