Two people remain in critical condition, and three others seriously injured, after a massive multi-car collision in the San Fernando Valley early this morning. The four-car pileup occurred at the intersection of Van Nuys and Victory Boulevards. Los Angeles Police Department Detective Bill Bustos reported that a 19-year old individual and a 15-year old passenger were traveling at nearly twice the legal speed limit, south on Van Nuys in a Volkswagen Passat, when they ran a red light and plowed into three other vehicles. The driver was apprehended at the scene and charged with a felony DUI for his involvement in the collision. It took local firefighters almost 20 minutes to extract two women from their vehicle.
All five victims involved in the crash were transported to area hospitals, with two individuals listed in critical condition. LAPD are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact them as soon as possible.
Car accidents are unfortunately a regular occurrence throughout the greater Los Angeles metro, with drivers suffering injuries every day. However, when these injuries come as the result of another driver’s reckless behavior, there must be accountability. Depending on the seriousness of the accident, victims may be entitled to receive damages for emergency medical care, long term rehabilitation, pain and suffering, as well as any property damage or lost income. In some cases, the courts may award punitive damages, which are designed to punish the at-fault party for their egregious behavior.
