Exposure of Deadly Bacteria to 100 or More UCLA Patients

By Robert Kahn on February 18, 2015 - Comments off

At UCLA’s Ronald Reagan Medical Center, there have been more than 100 patients that could have been exposed to a potentially fatal bacteria due to contaminated medical scopes, where similar outbreaks have occurred at other hospitals throughout the country.

The superbug known as CRE may have contributed to those deaths. The bacteria can be deadly for up to 50% of those patients that have been exposed.

Immediately, UCLA reported to the public health authorities once they discovered the bacteria in one of their patients. This has possibly been due to endoscopes inserted down a person’s throat for the treatment of gallstones, cancer and other digestive system ailments.

A university spokeswoman named Dale Tate states that “the two scopes involved with the infection were immediately removed and UCLA is now utilizing a decontamination process that goes above and beyond teh manufacturer and national standards.”

An epidemiologist in the CDC’s Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion named Dr. Alex Kallen states that outbreaks are serious because of the difficulty in treating the superbug as well as its detection. Kallen states in an interview: “This bacteria is emerging in the U.S., and it’s associated with a high mortality rate.” He goes on to say, “We don’t want this circulating anywhere in the community.”

If you have been exposed to the CRE superbug or any bacteria due to someone else’s fault, you could be entitled to money, including money for medical bills, pain and suffering, lost wages, possible emotional distress, and more.
