At least one person was rushed to the hospital after a drunk driver collided with multiple vehicles in Van Nuys Sunday night. ABC 7 reports that police responded to a multi-car accident at the intersection of Sherman Way and Allott Avenue, around 11:30pm. Officers indicated there was debris everywhere and a number of cars devastated, with one person injured. A witness to the scene indicated that the man who caused the wreck was previously seen “weaving through traffic” and traveling at a very high rate of speed. The man was booked on suspicion of DUI, with additional charges, pending an investigation.
Those who choose to drive intoxicated put their lives, and the lives of everyone around them, at risk. In the state of California, it is illegal to operate a vehicle with a blood alcohol level of .08%. If caught, violators can face a number of penalties, including jail time. Should the offending driver cause an accident with another motorist or pedestrian, the punishment grows exponentially. Additionally, drunk drivers can face civil suits from the innocent by-standers they injure.
